Posts: 2 (05/12/06 23:28:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi I am wanting to hear from other women who find themselves 6 weeks pregnant at 39 years I have 4 children oldest 21,19,15,12 been remarried for 9 years my husband is 53 with 4 grown children and after all these years am pregnant I actually thought it was not possible! suffered a really bad misscarriage 8 yrs ago and since have never used any contraception! I am excited and we both dont find it a problem my visit to the doctor has worried first he says i have an increased chance of misscarrige which now the days seemed to be waiting for someting to happen and 1 in 80 of downs symdrome he would like me to go have a cvs at 11 weeks i am unsure of this test any information would be greatly appreacaited also i was taking zoloft until i found out the doctor was unsure of any side effects and was going to get in contact with me havent heard for a week so just didnt go back on them thanks

The other is prozaic or Fluoxetine. Both have a fairly good safety record in pregnant and breastfeeding women. I use both when clinically needed. As always you should try and hold off with any medication until after the 12th week. CVS or chorionic villi sampling is an early genetic test. Sampling of placental tissue via the cervix is performed at the end of the first trimester about 12 weeks. There are two concerns with CVS. One is the fetal loss rate of 0.8%. This is the same as genetic amniocentesis later in pregnancy. The new concern is the possible damage to the fetus. It has recently been noticed an increase in Limb Reduction deformities (LRD). That is the limbs do not form completely. The rate of LRD is currently under investigation, but is believed to be around 1 per 3,000 birhts Conclusion: CVS between 10 to 12 weeks is relatively safe and accurate. I had a blood test / ultrasound combination test for Down's syndrom that can be done in the first trimester. It even needs to be done close to 11 weeks to be reliable. The ultrasound test (nuchal translucency) measures the thickness of the skin on the back of a fetus's neck. The blood test measures levels of a protein called pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and a hormone called free human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). This first trimester test claims indentifying 87% of down babies, whereas the quadruple test done around 16 weeks indentifies 81%. If both are done, some think the detection is higher. I would demand this test first (the 11 week one). If it indicates a high risk of Down's in your baby, then you may feel it's worth the risk to do cvs or an amnio. I also am 39 and 14 weeks pregnant with my 5th baby and thought I wouldn't fall pregnant again as I have not been on birth control for well over 12 mths. My children are aged 22 (with a 4 yr old daughter), 13, 11 & 8. I also was advised to have testing done, but was too late for cvs so am now to have a blood test this week to determine if I should have amnio. My concern is I have had bleeding in the last 2 weeks (with no pain or anything), but ultrasound confirms everything is ok. Dr said report would have shown if there was anything wrong and would have advised testing but it came back all clear. I now have a higher chance of miscarriage if I have amnio due to the bleeding. It is very scary when they talk about these tests and then you have to wait 2 weeks for results. My husband now does not want me to have it done but I guess we will wait and see what the blood test shows... Good luck with everything... Kim

I figure the need isn't worth the risk. My husband and I talked about it and we decided that it wouldn't change anything if the test was positive so why add the stress and worry during the pregnancy? Are these tests required after a certain age?
